WAYNE SPEIRS
1965 - Lemoyne D'Iberville
Wayne Speirs
I never graduated that year
because I flunked French which was a must subject in those days. The
irony is that I work a lot in French today and enjoy speaking it and
many of my clients and friends are French Canadians or as some of them
like to say, Quebecois.
The Stirlings |
As
some of you who may remember me know I played the guitar in a band that
did play a few times at our high school dances under the name The
Sterlings . Miles Tyrer, Bob Ryan, Joe Stiener and myself.
Bob and Miles went to LeMoyne and Joe was at Chambly County High in St.
Lambert. That was in 1963. |
Eddy and the Prophets |
After I left school in the year of '65
I joined Eddy and the Prophets with Ed Deigan, (you can find him in our
65 The Seigniory book on the top left corner of page 8). Ray Sisco and
my brothers Fred on base guitar and Brian on drums. We played professionally traveling to the USA
(Boston, Detroit, Thule Greenland) Yes that's right! Thule, Greenland.
I'll explain this trip to whoever replies to me and asks me about it. It
was an experience.
We were playing rhythm and blues music, commonly known as Black music.
We became a big hit with that community. They called us the blue eyed
soul brothers. We were also protected by them as you can imagine in the
60's what it was like in the states. Here we were a bunch of white kids
playing black music in black communities in segregated USA. On more than
one occasion there was a fight between our black supporters (thankfully
there were a lot of them) and some black heckler who wanted to crush our
skulls. Thankfully, they never succeeded. |
I played music all through the 60's, 70's and 80's(These were beautiful
times to be a musician) until 1985 when I got tired of the travel. I
like to tell my friends when they ask why I left the music business was
because there was too much wine, too many women and not enough song. I
was married for 5 years from 1970-75 and had a boy we called Jason who
is 32 years old and is presently building a house in St. Lauzar, Quebec
(a west island community of Montreal) with his girl friend.
Jason is a chip off the old block. He works as a professional musician
playing... wait for it...Guitar. Unlike me however he is more freelance.
He has his own band as well as backing up a couple of Quebec singers and
he does studio work.
I got divorced in 76 from his mother and promptly
moved in with my girlfriend who I lived in sin with for 24 years. We had
a girl we named Melissa in 1980 who is perfectly bilingual. You could
not tell she speaks French when she is talking English and visa versa.
She is now 22 and a Nurse at the Jewish General Hospital in the Oncology
ward (That's Cancer for those who don't know) She is the sunshine of my
life. I have the two greatest kids in the world. Everyone should be as
lucky as me when it comes to this. They were both angles all through
their teen years. I communicate with my daughter in an uncanny way. When
I think of her as in wanting to see her, she calls and comes over and we
spend some time together. She lives with her mother in Greenfield Park
which is close by.
Today I sell houses on the South Shore of Montreal. I'm a Real Estate
Agent with Re/max Brossard and this since 1985 Glade to see so many of
you, a lot of whom I don't remember but recognize the pictures. Keep up
the good work Cheryl. I will be sending along some pictures of LeMoyne
D'Iberville School as it is today. I don't know if everyone knows this
but it is now a French school. |
